Across Africa, including Uganda, underserved communities face a critical healthcare crisis: limited access to affordable, quality care for both communicable and non-communicable diseases. This results in a disproportionate burden of preventable illnesses, premature death, and economic hardship, especially impacting middle-aged adults and the elderly who struggle with mobility.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 71% of all deaths in Africa, with a significant proportion attributable to preventable causes. In Uganda, NCDs represent 48% of all deaths, highlighting the urgent need for preventative measures.
Despite a steady increase in life expectancy across Africa, the potential for healthier, more productive lives remains untapped in underserved communities. This is because limited access to preventative care, coupled with inadequate healthcare infrastructure and financial barriers, hinders healthy aging, limits individual and community productivity, and perpetuates a cycle of poverty.
